Death Note (Anime)

Death Note (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Note) is an Anime / Manga series that I watched (in its entirety) a little while ago. The premise of Death Note is that there exists spiritual beings (called Death Gods) that are responsible for reaping human lives – which they do by writing down a human’s name in their notebook of death (or ‘Death Note’). In this world one Death God (Ryuk) is bored and decides to drop his Death Note in the human world to see what happens. It is picked up by a senior high school student – Yagami Light – who concludes that it is his responsibility to use the Death Note to rid the world of ‘bad’ people.

Death Note has a number of characteristics that I appreciate in Anime:

The subject matter is quite hard hitting and causes you to question your personal opinion on issues like capital punishment (indeed many characters in the show struggle with this themselves).
At only 38 episodes long, Death Note has a specific story to tell and once the story is told the series is over. This is quite refreshing when compared with American animation where shows linger on indeterminably until their ratings start to fade.

But what I really loved about this show was that in almost every episode there was at least one moment where I had no idea how a given character was going to get out of their current predicament, and at least one moment when I was genuinely surprised by the actions of one of the characters (usually Yagami Light in both cases J). Indeed even up to the final episode it is hard to predict who is going to win and what the final outcome will be.

All in all a fantastic series that I recommend that you watch.
